Torchwood

Torchwood (IMDb, Wikipedia), separate from the government, outside the police and beyond the United Nations. With this silly phrase Captain Jack Harkness normally introduces his team. Torchwood is a secrete institute which protects the earth from aliens and other evil creatures. They guard the time-space-rift in Cardiff, through which the creatures come from. Jack leads his small team which is quite often disloyal. However, thanks to his advanced knowledge he normal can set things right. Despite all the difficulties, Torchwood is hopefully ready for the 21. Century, when everything changes.

BBC’s sci-fi-drama is a spin-off of the forever-running Doctor Who series (IMDb: classic series, current series, Wikipedia) . But you don’t need any Doctor Who knowledge to understand  Torchwoods story. It isn’t bloated with references to Doctor Who and could easily run without being a spin-off. However if you already know the Doctor, there are enough links to be found. Anyway Torchwood has a little darker, more serious setting than Doctor Who.

Of course Torchwood has the typical weaknesses of sci-fi-series like some techno babble,  plot-holes and weak CGI-Animations. But the well directed, well-written episodes and likable characters make Torchwood fun to watch. Yes, there are weak episodes, but who cares =). In my opinion, it is one of the best currently running sci-fi-series.

So, I’m excited for the third season, which will be a mini-series with only five episodes =(.
